How Epic power’s technology is supporting Connected Energy’s second life BESS M-STOR platform. BESS system integration. Project Highlights The challenge Epic Power’s bidirectional DC/DC converters as contribution The technology behind the solution Key benefits in second life batteries integration Energy flow As demand for sustainable Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) continues to grow, Connected Energy is pioneering a circular approach by giving electric vehicle batteries a second life. Its M-STOR platform is designed to transform second-life EV batteries into scalable, grid-scale energy storage systems, extending battery life while supporting the transition to renewable energy. To support the development of M-STOR, Connected Energy partnered with Epic Power, integrating its bidirectional DC/DC converters technology into the system architecture. BESS system integration. Project Highlights Application: Grid-scale second-life Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Platform: M-STOR. Epic Power solution: Bidirectional DC/DC converters. Development pipeline: 750+ MWh. Key outcome: A scalable, efficient, and flexible energy storage platform built through close engineering collaboration. Michael Salvador – Head of Product Innovation of Connected Energy“Epic Power’s converter technology fits our M-STOR application particularly well. Its scalability lets us offer customers a wide range of storage duration, and gives us the flexibility to integrate a wide range of battery packs without any compromise on system performance. This means that M-STOR can actively track the optimum DC voltage to maximise the PCS performance, improving the combined system efficiency.Just as importantly, Epic Power’s team has been skilled and supportive throughout, helping us integrate the converter in fast-track mode.” The challenge M-STOR was designed to accommodate a wide range of second-life battery types while delivering high efficiency, scalability, and reliable performance. Achieving this required a flexible DC/DC conversion solution capable of managing varying battery voltages and maximizing the efficiency of the overall energy storage system Epic Power’s bidirectional DC/DC converters as contribution Epic power supplied its buck-boost bidirectional DC/DC converters, EPC 50A 1400, and worked closely with Connected Energy throughout the integration process. The collaboration included engineering support, system integration, and technical assistance, helping accelerate development while optimizing system performance. Raúl Ramón – Business Development Manager of Epic Power“The technical team at Connected Energy has a deep understanding of the challenges involved in an integration of this scale and never takes shortcuts. It is a pleasure to collaborate with engineering teams capable of designing power electronics solutions for multi-megawatt applications with such meticulous attention to detail.I am confident that their M-STOR solution will become one of the most competitive BESS solutions for multi-megawatt utility-scale applications“. The technology behind the solution Epic Power’s bidirectional DC/DC converters enable each battery module to operate at its optimum voltage, regardless of battery chemistry or state of health. This architecture improves overall system efficiency, increases flexibility when integrating different battery types, and helps maximize the performance and lifetime of second-life batteries. Key benefits in second life batteries integration Independent battery module management. Optimized DC voltage for improved PCS efficiency. Support for multiple battery chemistries and voltage ranges. Modular and scalable system architecture. Higher overall energy efficiency and battery utilization.
